What you need
I was so worried about getting the nursery set up and having everything bought and ready but 4 months on and reflecting back I needn't have panicked quite so much. In my experience this is what you need with a newborn.
In the beginning...
Moses basket
The cot that you lovingly put up probably won't be touched for quite a while yet. I had sleeping bags but preferred blankets in the early days as it was less disturbance to change nappies at night. But good to have a choice in bedding.
Boobs/bottles
Even if breastfeeding a couple of bottles in the house are good for emergencies. I recommend Dr Brown, amazing. Also nipple cream (Lanolin) and a couple of nipple shields. A few breast pads as well. If you continue with breastfeeding then a expressing machine will also be your friend but as they are quite pricey I wouldn't invest until you're sure you will be breastfeeding for the foreseeable future.
Baby gros
Second hand is fine, they will be pooing over most things anyway. A couple of cute outfits too but mainly in the first month you will be chilling at home a lot and want baby to be comfy. A couple of nice pairs of pj's for you is also a bonus
A shit load of nappies. And nappy cream, they poo a lot in the first few weeks!
A shit load of muslins. As above with puke.
Some kind of chair that swings/bouncers will be a lifesaver. As will a dummy.
A sling or carrier is handy but if you're going it use one introduce it early.
A pram is pretty essential, as is a carseat. If you can get one that clips into your pram that's handy. We didn't and it was annoying at times as lugging a carseat about is heavy!
The baby monitor wasn't used till week 8 in our house as she was always right next to me. Although when she finally did start to sleep upstairs I am so glad we had a video one just for the peace of mind you can always see what they are doing.
Toys you can gather along the months but they probably won't be interested for the first few months. More interested in your face ☺!!!
Also, don't worry about cuddling your baby too much. Holding her asleep. Sleeps on your chest. Enjoy it. At 4 months mabel won't sleep on me anymore, she much prefers her basket. People who say you will get them into 'bad habits' are dickheads. They're babies they need lots of love. I saw it as they need to learn to enjoy sleeping feeling safe. When they've mastered falling asleep then you can get them into good habits sleeping by themselves. Trust me it goes way too fast.
